Activity Visit to Picasso Supercomputer

Activities

As part of the educational synergy between our Erasmus+ 3D Academy and Green ITC projects, our students had the opportunity to visit the Picasso Supercomputer at the University of Málaga’s research facilities in Málaga TechPark (PTA), a workshop was held on 10 October 2026, where students had the opportunity to improve their Exploring Picasso Supercomputer: Advanced Technologies and Sustainable Innovation Through Erasmus+ Synergies discovering the fascinating world of high-performance computing and its applications in science, engineering, and digital innovation.

During the visit, our expert guides, David Castaño and Luis Díaz, introduced students to the architecture and operation of the Picasso supercomputer, explaining how powerful computing systems process enormous amounts of data and solve complex scientific and technological problems.

One of the most interesting aspects was discovering the cooling infrastructure and energy requirements of supercomputing systems, which allowed students to reflect on the importance of energy efficiency and sustainable technological development.

The activity was particularly relevant to the 3D Academy project, which aims to develop students’ digital competences through 3D modelling, additive manufacturing, virtual reality, and innovative engineering technologies. Students learned how advanced computing resources can support complex 3D simulations, engineering design optimization, digital modelling, and the development of new manufacturing solutions.

At the same time, the visit supported the objectives of the Green ITC project, encouraging students to investigate how technological innovation can contribute to environmental sustainability through more efficient computing infrastructures, optimized resource consumption, and scientific research.

The visit also included a small technological museum displaying historical components from previous generations of the Picasso supercomputer, helping students understand the evolution of computing technologies and the importance of continuous innovation.

This experience demonstrated how the two Erasmus+ projects complement each other: 3D Academy promotes advanced technological skills, while Green ITC encourages their responsible and sustainable application.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to David Castaño and Luis Díaz for their excellent explanations, enthusiasm, and dedication to sharing their expertise with our students.

An inspiring journey into supercomputing, demonstrating how advanced digital technologies, engineering, and sustainability can work together to shape the future!
