The 3D Academy project offers a comprehensive training programme that combines digital fabrication, emerging technologies, creativity and sustainability through practical, hands-on learning experiences.

3D Design and CAD Modelling

Students developed their computer-aided design (CAD) skills using SketchUp and Tinkercad, progressing from basic modelling techniques to advanced tools, component libraries, Boolean operations and the preparation of models for 3D printing. These workshops provided the foundations for designing functional and creative three-dimensional objects.

Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Technologies

Participants received extensive training in modern additive manufacturing processes. The programme covered filament, resin and powder-based 3D printing technologies, advanced materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium composites, topology optimisation, post-processing techniques and quality control. Students also explored professional 3D scanning technologies and gained first-hand experience in university laboratories and industrial environments.

Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies

The project introduced students to cutting-edge digital technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and immersive design environments. Workshops included Open Brush, Google Open Blocks, Arkio VR for architectural design, AI-assisted 3D content generation with Stable Diffusion and Meshy AI, as well as drone programming, enabling students to explore new ways of creating, visualising and interacting with digital models.

Sustainability and Environmental Awareness

Innovation was combined with environmental responsibility through activities that promoted sustainability and biodiversity. Students participated in outdoor workshops such as the Green Detectives programme, using digital technologies alongside scientific observation to better understand local ecosystems and encourage responsible environmental practices.

Cultural Heritage and European Citizenship

Each international mobility also included a rich programme of cultural activities designed to help participants discover the history, traditions, heritage and identity of the host country and region. Through guided visits, cultural workshops, local events and the experience of staying with host families, students gained a deeper understanding of Europe’s cultural diversity while recognising the shared values that unite European citizens. These experiences promoted intercultural dialogue, respect, inclusion and a stronger sense of European identity.

Learning Outcomes

Through this multidisciplinary training programme, students strengthened their digital, STEM and engineering competences while developing creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills. By combining classroom learning with university laboratories, industrial partners, cultural experiences and international collaboration, the project prepared participants to apply advanced digital manufacturing technologies in real educational and professional contexts while fostering active European citizenship.
